Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced plans to build a border wall between Texas and Mexico. Critics of the plan are questioning whether the State of Texas has the authority to construct an international boundary.
Channel 4 Valley Central News asked Attorney Ricardo Barrera to comment:
“When you’re dealing with issues of crossing between borders, that’s a federal issue, and there’s federal pre-eminence as they say, over that type of issue,” said attorney Ric Barrera.
When asked about Governor Abbott’s statement that he would give state police officers the power to arrest migrants illegally crossing the barrier, Ricardo Barrera replied:
“Here he’s going to say he’s giving his police the power to ‘detain’, and not necessarily carry out the acts of what we would consider a federal detention for immigration purposes.”
Further announcements from Governor Abbott are expected in the coming days.
